What does it mean to surrender?
The term surrender has been coming up a lot lately. When looking at the definition of surrender:
- cease resistance to an enemy or opponent and submit to their authority.
- to yield to the power, control, or possession of another upon compulsion or demand
- to give up completely or agree to forgo especially in favour of another
When understanding surrender in other context it doesn’t always mean giving up control or giving up the fight.
Surrender is to let go of the attachment to the ego. Trust your intuition and follow your spiritual guides. The opposite of surrender is resistance. Some say the opposite of surrender is control.
Let’s look at the definitions of each of them:
- Resistance – the refusal to accept or comply with something; the attempt to prevent something by action or argument.
- Control – to exercise restraining or directing influence over, regulate, or to have power over someone or something.
Anytime you find yourself resisting something that is important and that you want to do, be, or have. Recognizing it at that moment and surrendering to the resistance. Anytime you find yourself controlling something or someone, recognizing it in that moment will give you the choice to step back and surrender. Being mindful and consciously aware of your actions towards things and feeling whether you are resisting something now and consciously surrendering to it.
Surrendering is a moment-to-moment choice! In the moment you can decide whether to resist something by fighting it or surrender to the divine grace and let it guide you. By fighting to get what you want you are trying to control the outcome of the situation. The understanding that things can flow naturally when you stop trying to make them work by fighting for them. Fighting for what you want is a resistance to “what is”! Be in the present moment and release the past from having power over you.
Trust is the most important part of surrender. Free yourself from control! While I was practicing trusting my intuition, psychic ability, and mediumship, surrendering became a radical practice. I was constantly surrendering to my linear, logical, and analytical mind. Creating space in my thoughts so that my guides and angels could download messages.
Surrender is a process that you need to practice all the time.
